My Journey to Classical Pilates

I came to Pilates after an injury made me aware of how limited and disconnected movement can feel when the body is not working as a whole.

I had always valued exercise, but Pilates taught me that strength alone was not enough. The body also needs control, coordination, balance, flexibility, and an understanding of how every part works together.

When I discovered Classical Pilates, I found a complete system rather than a collection of disconnected exercises. Each movement had a purpose, each exercise prepared the body for what came next, and the apparatus provided both support and challenge.

What began as part of my own recovery and personal practice gradually became a professional calling. I began teaching Mat Pilates in 2014 and expanded to the complete apparatus system in 2015.

For many years, I balanced teaching Pilates with a corporate career. That experience helped shape the way I teach today, with respect for real bodies, real schedules, and the importance of movement that supports everyday life.

Why I Choose Classical Pilates

The original system. Purposeful progression. Lasting skills.

There are many ways to teach Pilates. I chose to dedicate my practice to the Classical Pilates method because it preserves the complete system developed by Joseph Pilates.

Classical Pilates follows a purposeful order and progression. Each exercise builds the skills needed for the next, allowing strength, mobility, coordination, and control to develop together over time.

I do not want clients to simply complete a workout. I want them to understand what they are doing, build strong movement foundations, and develop skills they can carry into more advanced exercises and everyday life.

My Teaching Philosophy

Personalized instruction. Purposeful progress. Practice for life.

No two bodies move in exactly the same way. Every client brings a different history, experience, and set of goals into the studio.

My responsibility as an instructor is to observe the person in front of me, select the exercises and apparatus that best support that client, and teach the method in a way that is both challenging and appropriate.

My approach emphasizes:

✓ Precision over repetition
✓ Quality over intensity
✓ Progression over perfection
✓ Understanding rather than simply following
✓ Long-term development over quick fixes

Whether you are completely new to Pilates or have years of experience, I want you to leave each session with a better understanding of your body and greater confidence in how you move.

“Gretchen is knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely cares about each client. She provides individualized guidance based on how each person moves, making every session effective, appropriate, and personal. Her bright, intimate studio creates a welcoming environment for learning and progress.”

Thoughtful Guidance Designed Around You.

Careful Observation

I watch how you move and use what I see to determine where you need support, where you are ready for greater challenge, and which skills should come next.

Clear Instruction

I explain the purpose of the exercise, help you understand what you are working toward, and provide corrections that are specific and useful.

Individual Progression

Your sessions develop as your skills develop. We do not rush into advanced exercises before the necessary foundations are in place.

The Complete Pilates System

Depending on your needs, your session may include the Reformer, Cadillac, Chairs, Barrels, Mat, and additional specialized Classical apparatus.

A Supportive Challenge

Pilates should challenge you, but it should also help you feel capable. My goal is to create an environment where you feel supported, focused, and encouraged to progress.
